One of the many things we love about this chest is the safety lid. It features a support that prevents the lid from slamming down on little fingers, and an additional safety cutout in the front panel makes opening the chest easy as pie. So all those stored books, games, and toys are within easy reach for the little ones. This chest is so well-constructed, you can even use the lid as a seat. The Handcrafted Toy Chest by Little Colorado meets all Consumer Product Safety Commission standards for product safety, of course.

All finishes are water-based, low-VOC made by Sherwin Williams and other American manufacturers. Wood raw materials come from environmentally responsible suppliers. MDF used is manufactured by Plum Creek, and is certified green, CARB-compliant, and low-formaldehyde. All packing insulation is 100% post-consumer recycled. All shipping cartons are either 100% post-consumer recycled or are made of recycled cardboard.

After an extensive search for a durable, spacious and well-made -- yet attractive -- storage solution for our son's extensive toy collection, my husband and I found these toy boxes. We explored shelving, because it was more attractive than most toy boxes (they are being used in our living room so that was an issue for us), but the shelving often did not fit the dimensions of some of his largest toys. We also explored other toy boxes and bags, but they were often unattractive AND surprisingly, also too small to hold his toys. We found that this toy box fit the bill for what we wanted and even exceeded our expectations. The construction is top-rate and the boxes (we bought 2) are very spacious. Plus, since they are fairly non-descript, we can use them well past our child(ren?)'s younger years for blankets, books or whatever storage we need. We are extremely happy with our toy boxes!

The "natural laquer" finish that I got looks more like the unfinished color sample, no amber shade to it at all. And the safety hinge is weak and does not support the lid when partially closed. It will slam shut on the corners and sides so keep little fingers out of the way!!

Very nice toy chest for the money. Only issue we have found is if it is a little full, the lid has a hard time closing. It matched our bunk beds perfectly and is well constructed. Would recommend this product.

I bought this unfinished toy box for my son's first birthday. It is made of very heavy, beautiful wood. I stained the toy box myself and it turned out great! I searched for the best toy box and I definitely believe that I found it! The safety hinge works great! I only wish that there was a cutout on the sides like there is in the front to protect little fingers. My son smashed his fingers on the side the first night we got it. Overall, I will definitely buy from Hayneedle again!

This arrived with a gash on the cover. It was a huge pain to reload the heavy thing into the box and package it for return shipment. Huge pain. Having said that I decided to reorder and give it another chance and the new one arrived today in fine condition. It has a solid wood cover and sides but the bottom looks like a weaker material so I won't take the chance of storing anything heavy in it. I have it in my living room adjacent to an almost nonexistent foyer to store stuff in. I resent having to send the damaged one back but this new one should work well.

I have a standard and smaller poodle and I needed a Toy chest for them. This is perfect since there is a lid and they can't pull out all of their toys at once and make the family room look like a day care center! It is also large enough to store their blankets, dog bones, brushes, etc. I really wanted a darker wood color so I will refinish it in the future. The packaging was excellent and no damage to the already assembled chest. Happy with purchase. The chest went into the family room where we spend a lot of time.
